Rain Gutter Styles & Materials
Compare gutter profiles, materials, sizes, and colors, and find the right system for your Southern California home or building.
Choosing the Right Gutter System
The right gutters do more than carry water off your roof. They have to handle heavy winter storms, hold up to years of strong sun, and look like they belong on your home. Your choice comes down to three things: the profile (the shape), the material, and the size.
RainAway has installed every major gutter style across Los Angeles since 1978. Here is a plain-language guide to the options, and we are happy to walk you through them in person at your free estimate.
Gutter Profiles
K-Style Gutters
The most popular gutter in the U.S. Its flat back and decorative front look like crown molding, and it carries more water than a half-round gutter of the same width. A great fit for most modern and ranch-style homes.
Half-Round Gutters
A classic rounded profile that suits Spanish, Craftsman, Tudor, and historic homes. Often paired with copper and round downspouts for a traditional look.
Fascia Gutters
A smooth, contemporary profile that also acts as the fascia trim, giving the roofline a clean, streamlined look.
Box Gutters
Large-capacity gutters used on commercial and industrial buildings with big roof areas. See our commercial gutters.
Gutter Materials
Aluminum
Lightweight, rust-resistant, affordable, and available in many colors. The most common choice for Southern California homes. More about aluminum gutters.
Copper
A premium material that lasts for decades and weathers to a natural patina. Higher upfront cost, but a standout look on the right home.
Bonderized Steel
Strong steel gutters that can be painted to match your home. Popular on commercial buildings and older homes that need extra strength.
Material Comparison
| Material | Best for | Upkeep | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | Most homes; wide color choice | Low: will not rust | $ |
| Bonderized steel | Commercial; custom paint colors | Moderate: keep painted | $$ |
| Copper | Historic and high-end homes | Very low: develops patina | $$$ |
Gutter & Downspout Sizes
Size matters more than most people expect. Los Angeles gets most of its rain in a few big storms, and undersized gutters overflow exactly when you need them most.
- 5-inch gutters handle most single-family homes.
- 6-inch gutters are a better fit for large roofs, steep pitches, roofs with valleys that funnel water, and commercial buildings.
- Downspouts should be sized and spaced to match. A larger downspout drains faster and clogs less.
We measure your roof area and pitch at the estimate and recommend the size that will keep up.
Colors
Aluminum gutters come in a wide range of factory-finished colors that will not need painting. Match your trim so the gutters disappear, or pick a contrast color to accent the roofline. See the full rain gutter color chart.

How to Choose
- Match the profile to your architecture: K-style for most modern homes, half-round for traditional and historic homes
- Choose aluminum for the best value, copper for a premium look, steel for heavy-duty or custom-painted jobs
- Size for your roof, not just the house footprint
- Add leaf guards if you have trees near the roof
- Ask to see color samples against your trim
